Insurance Opt-out

•To opt-out of the foreign health insurance (Guard Me) plan and opt into the Green Shield Canada health insurance plan, visit the Internationalization Office website and follow the opt-out process before October 10th, 2023.

You must be a full-time graduate student and upload a copy of your valid MCP.  If your request is approved, you will automatically be enrolled into the Green Shield Canada health insurance plan. You can only opt into the GSU plan in September of each year or in the first semester you register as a graduate student.  International students who live outside of Canada are not eligible for Green Shield coverage and must opt-out from both Green Shield Canada health and dental insurance before October 10th, 2023.   • The student must provide proof of existing insurance coverage in order to opt-out.  Please note that MCP on its own is not an acceptable form of alternative coverage.

  • Students are required to opt-out from the GSU plan at the beginning of every academic year.

  • Circumstances in which opt-out can be processed irrespective of the enrollment semester are:

    • The student has moved back to their home country due to the current pandemic situation, and the GSU insurance is no longer valid for the student.

    • The student has started working with an employer and receives alternative insurance coverage from the employer within the academic year.

    • The student status has changed from full-time to part-time and the student has alternative insurance coverage.

  • Once a student has opted out, they cannot opt back in during that same academic year unless their alternate insurance has been terminated. We would then need proof of this transaction before proceeding.

  • PLEASE SELECT GRADUATE STUDENT UNION (GSU).  Incorrectly selecting the MUNSU Health and Dental Plan will not opt you out of the GSU Health and Dental plan, and the insurance charges will remain on your account.

  • You will receive a confirmation code on the screen after opting out. This confirmation is NOT an approval of the opt-out but only an acknowledgment that the opt-out request has been received.

  • You will also receive a confirmation code to the email you provided. If you do not receive an opt-out confirmation email, please contact us immediately.

  • For international students who are outside Canada: You can use GSU’s address for completing the form: 216 Prince Philip Drive, St. John’s, NL, A1B 3R5, CANADA; and the office number:  (709) 864-4395.
